The Public Communication Division of the School of Communication at American University is seeking a senior appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with tenure, to begin Fall 2003, with expertise in public relations; public affairs; public interest advocacy; or political communication.

The School: The School of Communication offers a broad range of undergraduate, graduate and non-degree programs that make full use of Washington, D.C., and cover every area of communication studies, including public communication, journalism and visual media. Faculty in the Public Communication division, many drawn from the professional world, have expertise in political, advocacy, non-profit, corporate, international, and integrated marketing communications, and students have the opportunity to take intensive courses in each of these fields. The School of Communication has 900 undergraduate and 300 graduate students in visual media, journalism, and public communication programs. American University is an independent, co-educational university with more than 11,000 students.

Responsibilities: Teaching, research, writing, publishing and leading the development of new courses and programs in relevant fields such as non-profit communication, political communication, social marketing, public opinion research, ethical issues in communication, online communication strategies, corporate communication, and the role and impact of mass media. Teaching responsibilities involve an average five-course load per year, including undergraduate and graduate courses in full-time and weekend programs. All faculty are expected to advise students, continue creative, professional or scholarly work, and participate in School and University activities and governance.

Qualifications: A record of distinction in professional and/or academic experience in public relations, public affairs, advocacy or political communication; a body of work recognized for its excellence in the professional and academic communities; a record of continuing evidence of relevant and effective professional service and demonstrated ability for continuing achievement in areas of teaching, scholarship and/or creative and professional endeavors. MA required. Evidence of excellence in teaching at the college level or of potential as an outstanding teacher.

Salary: Salary is negotiable, depending on qualifications and experience.
